A twelve-twelvemonth-old orphan, Tree-ear lives under a bridge with a man called Craneman who has an uncomfortable leg and he started to take intendance of Tree-ear when he was a very small child. As the kid's guardian, he always stresses "Work gives a man dignity, stealing takes information technology abroad and stealing and begging makes a man no better than a dog." Despite their poverty, they seem to struggle to live in honesty.
Even though Tree-ear is a young child, he is very fascinated with the potters, especially Min, and frequently watches his piece of work. One twenty-four hours Tree-ear gets into Min's yard and appreciates his work but he drops and breaks a box by blow. To pay for his mistake, Tree-ear gets to piece of work for Min for nine days. For those 9 days, he just gathers woods for the kiln and it is very tough task for this child but he feels honored to go closer to the potter stuff. When the expected 9 days are expired, Tree-ear is nevertheless willing to assistance Min. Min accepts his offer proverb "I cannot pay you". However, Min provides free repast for Tree-ear and the kid is very happy to get enough lunch but he feels sorry for Craneman and thinks he should have saved some for him.
